Home cooking

Instant noodles / fishcakes
It's Yom Kippur. I don't know what's happening outside our doors as we're not going out this week because of the lockdown. Usually there'd be jews going to the Wailing Wall to pray. A rather solemn day ... no festivities ... people walking in silence. But I don't know what's happening this year. By evening the feast will be over and life should get back to normal ... or as normal as the lockdown allows.

Indoors work continues for me as usual. Maybe even more. Besides my daily routine of throwing out the monastery garbage and watering the plants in this sudden desert storm that blew in today ... today I opened up a dozen boxes of books donated by the White Fathers living down the road. Some very precious and old books and magazines. But I tire easily so after that I had to go to my room to rest. Then it was reading and studying ... in between playing with Buddy and JJ.

Apples/honey
Like the previous lockdown ... home cooking becomes the main thrill of the day. It needs alot of creativity as the ingredients are aways the same and very limited. The other day I had canned tuna with mustard, mayonnaise and pickled chilli with fresh tomatoes and pitta bread. Another day I had instant noodles with spicey thai fish cake and fish cake in soya wrap. And last week being the jewish New Year, the traditional snack is fresh apples in honey. It's supposed to sweeten the new year. I figured that using green sour apples is best as the tartness goes well with the sweet honey. It so happened that my friend who lives in a farm gave me some fresh honey. None of that sugar-added commercial honey ... it's rich, creamy, and smells of the fields in Bethlehem. I guess I'll be adding another 4kg this lockdown. Sigh.

Anyway ... what a day to spend on Yom Kippur. While the rest of the country is fasting ... I'm thinking of food.
