Mixed news

Well ... it's slowly leaking out into the news now that there were not just 2 attempts by Israelis to set themselves on fire due to the dreadful financial mire that State bureaucracy caused. This morning saw the 6th and 7th attempts at self-immolation in one week. This is very catchy .... we're expecting more of it this summer.  http://www.jpost.com/ArtsAndCulture/Arts/Article.aspx?id=278568

Damascus Gate filled with
Ramadan hawker tents
Ramadan is in full swing. The canon is fired at 4.30am to start the fast and 7.50pm to end the fast. The heat is still oppressive although not like last week's .... it's cooler in the evenings now. That lightens the Ramadan fast which is broken after sunset. And that's when life gets busy ... food shops open, hawkers of every thing saleable everywhere ..... fireworks exploding. The crush can get quite frightening. And of course pickpockets are on the rise. Next week is also the Jewish feast of Tisha B'Av or the commemoration of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem twice on the same day 600 years apart. Jews will be going to the Wailing Wall to lament, fast and do penance. Security will be like super tight then.

It's been all work for me this week. Am extremely exhausted. Tomorrow it's another section of the library to be shifted, painted and reset. But my neck and shoulder is killing me ... need another session of physio. One strange thing is my asthma is stopped 2 days ago. But my swollen arthritic fingers are getting worse. That makes manual work pretty difficult.
