Despite the tense atmosphere with heavy military presence, both feasts of Yom Kippur and Eid Al Adha began quietly without incident. Jewish men wore white, no leather shoes and remained quiet while walking to and from the Wailing Wall. There was a very solemn mood as usually these ultra-orthodox talk loudly and are always in a rush ... they never walk, they run. But for Yom Kippur (and Tisha B'Av), they walk slowly. They started fasting since sunset yesterday and end the fast this evening when the sun sets. Not a drop of water ... just like the muslims in Ramadan. It's harsh especially because today is one of the hottest days of the month.

Outside the Old City, the roads are deadly quiet. No cars, no buses or taxis or train. Total silence. The Day of Atonement is taken very seriously even by secular jews. Though they might not fast they'd at least stay at home and keep it a solemn day with no TV or other entertainment.

Damascus Gate last night

For the muslims it's Eid Al Adha ... they slaughter sheep and cook it to be shared with family and neighbors. Damascus Gate last night was filled with hawkers. Many shops remained open to late in the night. All the men have had new haircuts and everyone is wearing new clothes and shoes.

Well I hope this peace holds up for the next few days. I don't believe anyone wants to ruin the feast days with violence.
